“The Department of Environmental Services and the Cultural Affairs Division have been pleased to collaborate on this display for Clean Out Your Files Week. Sculptor Brece Honeycutt was invited to make a sculptural installation using commonly disposed of County office materials in order to draw attention to our consumption of precious natural resources. All elements of this temporary display will be reused or recycled.
Brece Honeycutt’s recent sculptures and drawings can be seen as portraits of old fashioned domestic objects, things associated with what was once known as “women’s work.” Intrigued with the lives of pioneer women, she has read many journals that document the hard trip west for many American families in the early 19th century. A reoccurring theme for these women was how both functional and sentimental objects became victims of the need to lighten one’s wagon load during these often treacherous journeys. This scarcity of material goods, the necessity of mending and carefully caring for the few precious items that one was able to keep, stands in stark contrast to our wasteful consumer culture of the late 20th century. It was this thought that guided the artist in her creation of this piece.”
